What is Living Process? guest post by Predrag Jakovljevic, TEC

What is Living Process? guest post by Predrag Jakovljevic, TEC | Living Process | Scoop.it

Long drawn-out and expensive ‘big bang, boil the ocean’ business process management (BPM) implementations are getting out of vogue. Organizations are beginning to shift investments in ‘big’ BPM projects to the back burner (or only for mission-critical processes) and looking into alternatives that generate results sooner rather than later. In today’s fast-paced business climate, companies need to move quickly and BPM projects should support this effort. However, if it takes multiple quarters to purchase, set up, and program a BPM system, it will probably take even longer to yield any measurable results. To stay competitive, companies need to get results out of their BPM implementations as soon as possible, and in 2014 and after they’ll be turning to solutions based on inexpensive open source and/or cloud BPM software to do it.

I believe the days of “transformational BPM” that require an army of services consultants and years of design to attain a multi-year ROI/breakeven point are going to become obsolete over time – replaced by the requirement of immediate ROI to the business and the ability to build and leverage process models with no coding, and therefore put business users literally in the driver’s seat.

Companies also need to approach BPM implementations with the assumption that they will evolve. The goal of any living organization is to improve and keep improving. One way to do that is to set process rules and policies in place that streamline processes. But what if business conditions change? What if you learn that the processes you’ve instituted to improve one part of the business are complicating another part of the business? You change them. BPM technologies must make it easy to rework your implementation – to have post-implementation agility.

One value prop around the concept of "living process" is that businesses want and need flexibility in their deployed processes, the means to identify quickly what changes are needed, and the means to make changes rapidly. The living process concept -- build as you go, expand, and be flexible and agile using intuitive and inexpensive BPM tools.

In order to maintain a "Living Process" you need to "industrialize" your entire implementation framework from its immediate business needs to their realization.
JP Fortin's comment, March 6, 2014 9:48 AM
This means that the Business is in the driver seat, conducting the organization through the "modelization" of its activities for data objects, business processes, business rules, transformation, and metrics.
